Walks and Wags, Inc. offers the most flexible group training classes available know as “Levels Training.”

Levels obedience training is a group program offering unlimited session during the period you are enrolled.

With a levels membership, you can come to our drop–in classes as often as you like for as long as you’d like. Get as much or as little training as you want or need based on your own expectations for your dog.

Check our schedule to see when each level is offered. Move through all four levels or choose to stay at a lower level. The choice is yours!

Millie's mom

Diane Gibbs

Associate Professor, Jakson's mom

Walks and Wags has been great for Jakson. He has been going since he was 5 months old, he is afraid of a lot of things and going to doggie daycare has really helped him with his fears of new things and with socialization. He looks forward to his days with his friends and it gives me a break the next day because he is still worn out.

Frequently Asked Questions About Training

What kind of training do you do?

We offer a full range of training services including private lessons, group classes and behavior evaluations. We specialize in family dogs, teaching them the skills they need to live comfortably in a household environment, such as walking on a loose leash, greeting new people politely, coming when called, and much more.
We are committed to positive -reinforcement training techniques and avoid the use of any method that suppresses behavior through force or intimidation. Our trainers are committed to continuing education to provide you with the best possible behavior counseling.

How old does my puppy need to be to start training?

We love puppies and encourage them to get started training right away. We agree with the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s position on the importance of early socialization.

Puppies must be at least 8 weeks old and up to date on their age-appropriate vaccinations to join our training classes, but also strongly recommend our special three week puppy socialization class for puppies under 16 weeks old.

“SOCIALIZATION + TRAINING = SUCCESS”

How old does my puppy have to be to come to class?

The first four and a half months of your puppy’s life are a wonderful time to teach him or her about the world. Let’s not waste a moment of it. We like to get started with puppy socialization classes as early as 8 weeks and then move right into regular training.

All puppies and dogs attending any Walks and Wags, Inc. classes must be up-to-date with their age-appropriate rabies and distemper vaccinations. Bordatella (canine cough) intranasal vaccine is required for all dogs coming to Walks and Wags, Inc.

Owners are required to bring a copy of their dog’s veterinary records to orientation or ask their vet to email them to our office at info@walksandwags.com before bringing the dog to class.

We will turn away any dog that does not have these records.

What are the vaccination requirements?

Can you fix my dog's behavior problem?

Behavior is a complex mix of genetic’s, environment, and choices. Some behavior problems are easy to change; others require long-term strategies. We cannot guarantee your dog’s behavior will be “fixed” any more than a personal trainer can guarantee you won’t gain 10 pounds or a therapist can guarantee you will never again bite your nails.

We guarantee we’ll be there for you with professional advice and support. We’ll teach your dog how to handle sticky situations using proven methods of behavior modification. As you learn to be your dog’s best advocate, we’ll be your coach and cheerleader.

How do Levels classes work?

We offer a special kind of training program that offers maximum flexibility. You get a membership for a time period ( rather like a gym membership ) and come to the classes that fit your dog’s skill level and your personal schedule. The Levels Program has four tiers, each with its own skills and priorities. All dogs start in level 1 and move up at their own pace. You can attend any class at or below your dog’s assigned level.

The benefits of level training are numerous:
*You can get two (or even three) times as much training in the same time period since our classes are offered more than once a week.

*Orientation classes start approximately every two weeks so there is little wait to enroll your dog in a class.

*All the dogs in each level are at a similar stage in training. This allows instructors to better address the needs of each dog.

*You can work at your own skill level for as long as necessary. You’ll never fall behind since there is no requirement to move up.

*Students can revisit a lower level at any time to brush up on previous skills. You are encouraged to attend any class at or below your dog’s level. The higher you move up, the greater the flexibility you’ll have.

*Dogs move in and out of each level throughout the training, which provides new dogs as distractions each week – and learning to focus on you in a distracting environment is a wonderful canine skill!!!

* Students can take time off if they have a very busy week or go out of town. Just return to class at the same level without fear of falling behind.

*Level 4 will continue to work on your dog’s skills in a wide variety of areas such as off-leash training, publec manners training, and distance commands around distractions.

I'm not sure my dog can handle a group class. Are there any special options?

No problem…we’ll help you in our Relaxing Rowdy Rovers and Calming Cautious Canines classes. Or we can do private lessons.

Walks and Wags, Inc is proud to offer Relaxing Rowdy Rovers! We specialize in helping anxious dogs reach their goals for years with our doggie daycare.

Note: The Relaxing Rovers class is a subset of our Levels Program. You’ll sign up for a regular orientation and then join our special Relaxing Rowdy Rovers classes. Our goal with most of our Rowdy Rovers is to provide you and your dog with the tools you’ll need to eventually join a Level 1 training class. This class is by invitation only. If you’d like to learn more about it, send us an email training@walksandwags.com to tell us more about your dog.

Calming Cautious Canines class. It’s not easy having a shy dog. It’s hard to watch dog when you know she is scared: worrying about new environments, trembling when friendly people approach, flinching at loud noises, or hiding behind you rather than running around checking things out. Having a shy dog can also br frustrating because the qualities you know and love so much about your dog sometimes seem to disappear when you take your dog outside. You want everyone to see the wonderful qualities about your dog, but all they see is nervous energy. This class will teach you the skills you need to help your dog develop confidence and to feel secure in new situations.

NOTE: Our Calming Canines class is included in our Levels Program

For this class, you’ll register for one of our regular training memberships and attend a Levels Orientation. Then, you’ll start attending Level 1 classes where we will provide you and your dog with some extra skills geared especially towards confidence building and relaxation. Our Cautious Canines often spend a little longer in Level 1 just to get acclimated to the class enviroment and learn some basic coping skills. Our goal is to then help you proceed through the rest of the program as your dog begins to relax.

Are kids welcome in your class?

Yes, kids are welcome in our regular classes, but not in Relaxing Rowdy Rovers. Kids 8 and up are often very good trainers, with a little help from their parents.

Younger kids sometimes find the classes a bit long, so they may prefer to stay at home. Children must remain beside their parents and may not interact with any dog other than their own.

Some teens want to do all of the training and don’t need any help from their parents and that’s fine with us. However, every minor who comes to class must be accompanied by an adult who remains in the classroom with the child.

How do I know what healthy dog food to choose?

At Walks And Wags, Inc., we strongly believe there is a correlation between healthy eating and good behavior. While there is no single product that is perfect for all dogs, we can identify characteristics of a healthy diet. The Whole Dog Journal (which is like the Consumer Reports for dog lovers) recommends changing foods regularly and prefers wet over dry.

Whole Dog Journal’s selection criteria (updated Feb 2010):

*Animal protein at the top of the ingredients list. (Ideally a food will have one or two animal proteins in the first few ingredients.)

*Named animal protein source-chicken, beef lamb etc, instead of saying “meat” or “meal”

*When a fresh meat appears high on the ingredients list, it should have an animal protein meal in a supporting role, to augment the total protein in the diet. Fresh or frozen meats to not contain enough protein to be used as the sole protein source in a DRY food (they contain as much as 65-75 % water and only 15-20 % protein.

However, animal protein “meals” (meat, bone, skin and connective tissue that’s rendered and dried) contain only about 10 % moisture and as much as 65% protein.

*Foods should have whole meat, fish or poultry as the FIRST ingredient (and perhaps second and third too) on the label.

*If grains or vegetables are used, they should be whole grains and vegetables, rather than a series of reconstituted parts (i.e.; rice rather than rice flour, rice bran, brewer’s rice etc.)

*No meat by-products or poultry by-products

*Must not contain any artificial colors, flavors, or added preservatives (such as BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin). Since natural preservatives don’t preserve the food as long, be sure to check the “use by” date on the food.

*No fat or proteins unless they are identified by species (animal fat, meat proteins)

*No sugars or sweeteners (which are usually only added to food to entice them to eat food that are primarily made of grain fragments.

*Organic ingredients are preferred and they should be locally sourced.
